“Peace be with all of you!” – the first words of Pope Leo XIV. The Conclave has elected Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome. His election was announced to the waiting crowds by the Cardinal Protodeacon, Dominique Mamberti.
Archbishop Mark earlier issued a statement on the election of the new Pope.
On Wednesday, 7th May, the Conclave will begin for the election of a new Pope. During this time, please keep the College of Cardinals in your prayers. We will have a Votive Mass at 9.30am on that day followed by Eucharistic Adoration at 10.00am. The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has useful resources on their website, specifically under the title ‘Conclave. In this moving tribute, Archbishop Mark offers a heartfelt reflection on the life, witness, and legacy of Pope Francis.
From his episcopal motto Miserando atque eligendo (“Looking with mercy, he called him”) to his tireless commitment to the poor and marginalised, Pope Francis lived the Gospel with deep compassion and humility.
As Archbishop Mark recalls, he was a man who described himself simply as a “saved sinner” – someone transformed by the mercy of God, and determined that others might encounter that same mercy.
He stood close to those on the margins – the homeless, the migrant, the forgotten – embodying Christ’s love and inviting the Church to do the same.
As we commend Pope Francis to the Father’s house, we pray that he may hear the words he surely longed to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master.”
Please join us in praying for the repose of his soul.
Thank you for all the help and kindness you have all shown to me over the past few months. A special thank you to all those who helped with the Easter liturgies and to those who helped to prepare the church during this season. I wish you all a Happy and Holy Easter. God bless you all for your generosity.
